Under-pinning a medieval castle
Under-pinning of the 18th Century First Gate at Mont Orgueil Castle was completed under-budget and ahead of programme in late March. The works were designed by Hockley & Dawson, historic buildings engineers from Cranleigh, and ably carried out by Brenwal Ltd, civil engineering contractors.
18th Century masonry was found to be sitting on loosely compacted and very wet infill behind the mediaeval curtain wall. A marvellous find by the archaeologist on site was a pre-historic arrow head – small and very beautiful – of flint from what is now France.
