PROJECTS
Elizabeth Castle
Elizabeth Castle was built 1594-1601 and was Jersey’s principal fortress until the construction of Fort Regent in the early years of the 19th century. The buildings – which include a rare example of a military hospital block of about 1800 and substantial barrack blocks of the 18th century – were restored after the Second World War, but are now in need of increasing levels of repair. Exhibitions are also aging and interpretation is in need of improvement.
Annual curtain wall repairs
A heritage management agreement was agreed between the Government of Jersey and Jersey Heritage regarding the curtain walls at Elizabeth Castle.
The base of the curtain walls around the castle are inspected annually and works specified to limit further damage by storms. A record of all repairs is retained by Jersey Heritage.
Officer’s Barracks refurbishment
The complete refurbishment of an early 18th Century building including re-roofing, the removal of late 19thCentury external cement render and the re-arrangement of the interior to provide accommodation. The exterior has been re-plastered in lime and coated in a calcium silicate paint. Wood fibre internal wall insulation has been fitted and authentic paint colours chosen for both interior and exterior.
Hospital Block refurbishment
The repair of an early 19th Century, late Georgian hospital building that was extended in the 1880s.
The roof has been re-slated and the central valley gutter covered in lead. The masonry walls have been repointed and lime grouted where necessary. Missing brick/stud walls have been reinstated and lath and plaster replaced throughout. The former Coal Store, Engineer’s Store and Stables have been converted for use as a conference room, kitchen and public WCs.
