Elizabeth Castle Strategy Report

Elizabeth Castle was built 1594-1601 and was Jersey’s principal fortress until the construction of Fort Regent in the early years of the 19th century. The buildings – which include a rare example of a military hospital block of about 1800 and substantial barrack blocks of the 18th century – were restored after the Second World War, but are now in need of increasing levels of repair. Exhibitions are also aging and interpretation is in need of improvement.

We are currently working on a strategy report for development options at the castle. An historian has compiled a Conservation Plan, a destination consultant has completed an options appraisal of tourist opportunities and the inspecting architect has carried out a condition survey. We have drawn these together in a single proposal that we are now discussing with Jersey Heritage and stakeholders.
