Revitalising the High Street in St Helier

A commission by Government of Jersey to revitalise empty shop fronts in Queen St, St Helier. Some of the shops had been empty for years. By showing what’s possible, it is hoped that more landlords will fill properties on a short term or pop-up basis. This is good for the public, good for business and good for life on the street.

The installations included recreations of community workshops, exhibitions by artists inspired by the Lé Galvaûdeux walk, dance performance by Silhouette Studios, lighting and projection by Jersey Opera House.

A giant QR code asked visitors ‘What Should Appear Here?’

What happened

  • Over 90 islanders took part in the What Should Appear Here survey in less than 2 months.

  • Islanders aspirations for the High Street will inform decision making regarding its future.

  • 12 proposals for utilising the empty shops including performance, retail, community and tourism.

  • The installations were discussed on ITV, BBC, Jersey Evening Post and online media and have fuelled the appetite for more action in the high street.
